Forest Grove, Oregon
Deleganes, Alice Lorraine, age 94 of Portland, passed away November 1st, 2020 in her home at Touchmark in the West Hills.
Alice was born in Pendleton, Oregon on September 13, 1926 to Daniel and Laura (Moriarty) Smith. Her childhood years were spent in a variety of Pacific Northwest towns including Marysville, Colville and Coulee City. In 1947 she married her husband Sam. Except for two years in Salt Lake City, Utah the couple lived in Spokane, Washington for 53 years together until Sam's death in 2010. Following her husband's death Alice moved to Portland, Oregon to be close to her sons and granddaughters.
Alice was a devout Catholic who rarely missed weekly Mass. She participated in her local church working as an office secretary for 25 years at Our Lady of Fatima parish in Spokane, Washington. Her parish community was the center of her work, spiritual and social life.
Alice was a dedicated mother and homemaker. An accomplished seamstress she created many quilts, shirts and coats for her family and friends. She also enjoyed needlepoint which adorned the walls of her home. Alice mastered the art of preparing Greek pastries which were a special addition to the traditional holiday meals she prepared for a large extended family.
Alice had a keen sense of family. In addition to collecting and displaying many family photographs she compiled a detailed, multi-volume, family genealogy. Alice also loved pets and plants. She was fond of Boston Terriers and owned several. Later in life she switched to a cat but still lit up any time a canine came to visit. Her homes were adorned with many planters, some of which held plants that had survived decades despite all the children and pets.
Alice and Sam did a lot of trailer camping at National Parks and in Washington, California, Oregon, Utah and Montana. They went on a trip to Ireland, England, a cruise to Alaska and a cruise to the Caribbean. Those were highlights of her life, and special memories.
Even late in life Alice was a bit of a joker and liked to be a silly, mischievous, old gal. Often when babysitting Grandkids, it was Grandma that got the "talking to" at the end of the evening. She had a big sweet tooth - ice cream, cookies, and chocolate-covered raisins were some of her favorite treats. Alice's interests later in life were reading magazines, working on puzzles, games such as UNO and Wii bowling, and going for daily walks. She loved to be outside on a sunny day.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sam, and her brothers Hugh and Orville Smith.
She is survived by her three sons Sam, Anthony, and Daniel, daughters-in-law Ellen and Julia, and granddaughters Alicia and Sophia.
A private funeral service on November 17
