Forest Grove, Oregon
Alice S. Bell, 96, a resident of the Hillsboro community passed away on June 28, 2021 at her home.
Alice was born on February 11, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY. She was the only child born to Harry and Alice (Riley) Schultz. She was raised in Edgewater, NJ and attended Ft Lee High School graduating with the Class of 1943. Alice then attended University of Michigan and attained a Bachelor's Degree of Art in Geography in 1946.
She met her future husband, Donald E. Bell while in college; they married on June 14, 1947 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They first moved to Oakland, CA, and then Sacramento, CA. In 1964 they moved to Reno NV where they raised three boys, Jack, Glenn and Richard. Donald passed away in 1984. In 1990 Alice moved to Hillsboro to be closer to her sons.
Alice was raised within a family who avidly enjoyed winter and summer sports, and had uncles and a cousin who competed in Olympic games. She enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and particularly racing her sailboat designed and built by her father and herself. Her expert marksmanship shamed her children. It was not surprising that she married someone who had similar interests and continued to share those interests with her children.
Alice and Don also had cabins in Twain Heart CA, where they spent 6 month out of the year.
Alice was a loving and devoted wife and mother. "Ma Bell" was what all of her son's friends called her while they were growing up. A moniker not especially fond to her, but proudly badged on her vehicle license plate for over 50 years. Alice not only provided a clean and safe home for her son's friends but also a great source of food! She was the Queen of sandwich making, enjoyed cooking and being able to make food stretch to feed hungry mouths. Don and her traveled abroad, enjoyed games, reading, movies, and socializing with friends.
As a Grandmother, she was second to none, she spoiled her grandchildren with infinite amounts of love and wisdom throughout the decades. She was an amazing intellectual with a strong independent character that was resilient, selfless and caring. A perfect role model that helped shape the lives of all those around her.
Alice is preceded in death by her loving husband Donald, brother Raymond E Shultz, a son Richard, a grandson Bryan and her parents Harry Shultz and Alice Riley Shultz.
The family request donations in MaBell's name go to the Bonnie hayes Animal Shelter.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law; Jack Bell of Hillsboro, Glenn Bell and Rosie Arellano both of Hillsboro; two grandsons; Juston Bell and his wife, Laura both of Hillsboro, Sean Bell of Hillsboro, and a great granddaughter; Alice Elizabeth Bell.
MaBell we think about you always, we talk about you still. You have never been forgotten and you never will. We hold you close with our hearts, and there you will remain. To walk and guide us through our lives, until we meet again.
