Forest Grove, Oregon
Beth Arnell WoodsideThompson, 97, a resident of the Forest Grove community passed away on April 13, 2024 at her home.
Beth was born on May 16, 1926 in St. Charles, ID. She was oldest of four children born to Vera Arnell and happily lived with her extended family in St. Charles until she was 8 years old. Then she moved with her mother and step-father, Clarence Updike, to Manning, OR where she attended Hayward school and soon 3 younger siblings joined the family.
She met her future husband, Darrel Woodside, while working at the Tip Top Café in Forest Grove. They married six months later in Vancouver on November 22, 1946. They made their home in Forest Grove until 1959 when they moved to Salinas, CA where Darrel established Woody's Refrigeration. Beth worked alongside him doing his accounting and general office work. In the mid to late 1970's Darrel and Beth traveled the US in their RV. In 1980 they moved to Brookings, OR and then back to the Forest Grove area in 1983. Darrel passed away on June 21, 1997. Beth met her second husband, William "Earl" Thompson, at the Senior Center in Forest Grove, where they became good friends and on September 25, 1999 were married, and also made their home in Forest Grove. Earl passed away in 2014.
Beth was a loving and devoted wife to Darrel and loving mother to her three daughters Janice, Shirley, and Patti. She was a homemaker, room mother, PTA volunteer, and a Campfire Girls and Blue Bird Leader. She was always seeking to help her family and others through different benevolent organizations, her church, or the FG Senior Center. When in Brookings, she worked at the Stateline Myrtlewood Shop, which she thoroughly enjoyed and felt great pride in. She liked sewing, making crafts, gardening, and cooking. She was even on a bowling league and played couples & family billiards. She enjoyed spending time with her family and considered her daughters as dearest friends. After Darrel's passing, she was blessed by a second marriage to Earl Thompson and loved by his children and their families. And, as an added benefit, both Beth and Earl's kids liked each other well, and worked together in planning Beth's 80th Birthday Tea in 2006.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Darrel Woodside (of 50 years) and Earl Thompson (of 15 years); her parents; a son-in-law, Robert Daniel; her siblings, Keith Updike, Jeanette Wilson, Ronald Updike; and step children, Loren Thompson, and Sheryl Carlson; nephew, Roy Bowden.
