Clarence Henry Sweere

–

Forest Grove, Oregon

Clarence, 94, a long-time former resident of Banks and Forest Grove, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, March 16, 2021, at Harmony Guest Home in Hillsboro.
Clarence was born in Butler, Minnesota, the oldest of 12 children born to the late John and Margaret Sweere, who were immigrants from Holland.
He stirred many pots of oatmeal for his siblings and helped with their large family farm until the 8th grade, then worked on his Uncles farm in South Dakota.
He then returned home and enlisted in the Army in June of 1945. During that time, he drove a 2 ½ ton truck, delivered supplies, and was responsible for the maintenance and repairs.
He was honorably discharged in November 1946, and then moved West to Oregon with only 50 Cents in his pocket. He logged, then operated "Gasoline Alley" until acquiring another gas Station and named it "Sweere's Garage." He spent many hours towing wrecked cars and pounding out dents.
Clarence also helped to form banks Fire Department and served as Fire Chief from 1954-1964.
In 1966, he purchased a second at Stanley's Junction.
The fire Department bought his Garage in1972 for the Department's new location. Clarence then built "Sweere's Auto Body," where he worked until he retired.
He was active with the Banks Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed helping prepare the BBQ Pit Beef, participated in the Fire Ball Competition, and driving his decorated tow truck in the annual parade. One year, he was honored as being the "Grand Marshal."
Clarence enjoyed attending the car races and even sponsored Sweere cars on the track. He also watched many sports, enjoyed travel and casinos. He played Pai Gow Poker, Blackjack, and Crazy Poker.
Clarence's favorite color was blue. Most of the homes he owned were blue, and he drove a blue pickup. You could often find him relaxed in his "blue recliner."
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Jim, Jack, Gene, sister Alice Vercauteren.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, his siblings: Bea Berrens, Duane (Rosie) Sweere, Bob (Mary) Sweere, Toots (Al) Krueger, Anita (Fred) Harder, Hank "Michael" (Donna) Sweere, and Judy Sommerhalder. Also surviving are his children; Ron (Barb) Sweere, Claire Coombs, Ramona Sweere, Steve (Barbi) Sweere, and Ronda (Dirk) Von Struense, six stepchildren, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Clarence was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He always had a hug to give. His family and friends will miss him dearly. He was the "Good Deal."
The family suggests donations in Clarence's name to The Banks Fire District, 13430 NW. Main St., Banks, OR 97106.
