Forest Grove, Oregon
Gerald "Jerry" Schreiner, 94, of Portland, Oregon, entered eternal life very peacefully on February 8, 2023.
Jerry was born on August 19, 1928, in Plain, Wisconsin to Frederick and Clara Schreiner and was very proud of his German heritage. At an early age he enjoyed spending time in his father's blacksmith shop, hunting with his beagles and sneaking nickel beers at the local tavern. He also spent time at the local Catholic church as an altar boy during mass and could still recite prayers in Latin up until his death.
As a child, he wasn't interested in being scholarly so spent more time involved in pranks than his studies. Jerry joined the Navy at 17 with his parents' permission. He served in WWII as part of the Navy 1502 detachment of the 103
rd
Seabees. After his honorable discharge he returned to St. Luke Catholic School in Plain, Wisconsin to finish his studies and graduate from high school. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana.
He met Lucille (Lu)Feiner on an arranged double date and later married her on November 11, 1953. In addition to raising their three daughters, they enjoyed traveling, camping, dancing, and socializing with good friends. Lucille preceded him in death on December 29, 2009. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage together.
Jerry discovered he had a fascination and love of paper machines leading to a career that started and matured in the paper industry. Because of his mechanical aptitude and ability to "think outside the box" he grew with the industry and during his 40 years in it became recognized as an expert in his field. His career growth led him to move his family to Menasha WI, Appleton WI, Green Bay WI, Oswego NY, Menominee MI, Butler AL, Eugene OR and Brookfield CT. During the later years of his career, he consulted for the company traveling to France, England, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden and Brazil with Lucille often joining him.
Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He could "carve a mean turkey" and was usually the life of the party. The 1949 74cubic inch Congo green Harley Davidson motorcycle he rode during his college days was always a memory he enjoyed sharing. He would never pass up a piece of raisin pie with geedunk (ice cream). Jerry was known as the neighborhood "Mister Fix It" and could "jerry rig" almost anything. In his retirement years he added bowling, senior theater, and square and round dance. Making wooden cars and trucks for Toys for Tots every Christmas was another hobby he enjoyed.
After retirement Jerry enjoyed traveling with Lu, to see friends and family throughout the United States with their Airstream trailer for a year before settling down again in Tucson Arizona. They continued to travel and enjoy trips to Germany, Portugal, Kenya, cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska and spending time at their cabin near Durango Colorado.
Jerry was very involved in the raising of his daughters making sure they could change a tire, dance the Polka, honing their math skills with cribbage games and always urging them to do and be their best. His piece of advice to his children and grandchildren was always the same. "With hard work, perseverance and attention to detail you can do anything."
His big smile always had you wondering…. did he just get into mischief? or was he planning to get into mischief? He had a great sense of humor that we all loved him for.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille, his parents Frederick and Clara and his older sister Dolores Cords.
Jerry is survived by his daughters, Deborah (Allan) Carter, Patricia (Eric) Fraleigh and Barbara (Joaquim) Canelas. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Alex, Adam, Kyle, Nicole, David, Sophia, Max and Evan and great grandchildren Bridgett, Austin, Adler, Averik, Ava, Anthony and Alina.
Jerry's wishes were to be buried with his wife in Wisconsin. A service for him is being planned for a later date.
