Marvin Benedict Nussbaumer, 81, of Helvetia passed away in his home on Friday, September 7, 2018. He was a life-long member of St. Edward Catholic Church.
Marvin was born on August 15, 1937. He was the second of six children born to Benedict and Lena Nussbaumer. He was of the third generation to be raised on the family farm. Marvin worked alongside his dad from an early age. He embraced his Swiss heritage and competed in Swiss wrestling during Schwingfest. He also enjoyed the Swiss dances. Marvin could be heard yodeling while he worked.
Marvin met his future wife, Agnes, at a barn dance held at the farm. They were married on January 20, 1968. Marvin and Agnes celebrated their 50
th
Wedding Anniversary with family and friends this past January. They have five sons; Mark, Mike, Mitch, Marty, and Monte.
He loved to work on the dairy farm. Some people retire and slow down, but not Marvin. He loved dairy farming; first alongside his dad, then with his brother, Don, for thirty years, and lastly with his oldest son, Mark. He liked to spend time with his dog, Duke, especially in their endless pursuit of gophers and moles. Marvin enjoyed hunting in his younger years. Later he enjoyed salmon fishing and camping with friends and family which he did up until two weeks before his passing. He loved to tend to his raspberries for the pure satisfaction of sharing with others. Marvin was always a generous host and the farm was the setting for annual Christmas and Fourth of July gatherings.
He proved his resiliency by overcoming many injuries associated with life on the farm. Prostate cancer challenged Marvin for over 22 years. However, no matter how bad it got, he always assured others that things were "just fine". He was always the optimist; his faith carried him through.
Marvin is survived by his wife Agnes (Krautscheid) Nussbaumer, their five sons and spouses; Mark of Helvetia, Mike of Hillsboro, Mitch and Leah of Helvetia, Marty and Alysia of Sherwood, and Monte and Daniela of Fountainville, Pennsylvania, six grandchildren; Isaac and Emma of Helvetia, Kyle and Kearstin of Sherwood, and Avalena and Vivienne of Pennsylvania, and four siblings; Vernon of Helvetia, Ben of Waldport, Don of Helvetia, and Rosemarie Sabo of Helvetia. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Lena, and his sister, Linda Hertel.
