Michael Troy Messmer, a resident of the Cornelius community, passed away unexpectedly on July 10, 2023 at OHSU Hospital in Portland, Oregon. He had been golfing the previous day with friends when he suddenly experienced cardiac complications. He was 56 years old.
Mike, also known as "Mez", was born on May 15, 1967 in Portland, Oregon. He is the son of David and Berniece Messmer and the brother of Kelly Messmer. Mike was raised in North Plains and attended North Plains Elementary, Evergreen Junior High, and Glencoe High School, graduating with the Class of 1985. He then attended Phoenix Institute of Technology and graduated with an Associate's Degree in Electronics Technology.
Mike met his loving partner, Monica Valdez, in January, 1999, and they built a wonderful life together for the past 24 years. Together they have raised three children, Anna (31), Sophia (22), and Paeyton (14), as well as welcomed a grandchild, Rylee (8).
Mike began working for his family's video store when he was just 14 years old. He worked at Wheels Video and Movie Madness before becoming the owner and manager of Video 209 in Aloha. After working 20 plus years in the video business, Mike decided to explore other endeavors. He began working as a Laser Technician for Service Steel before transitioning to Vigor Marine, LLC, where he was employed as a Dockmaster at the shipyards in Portland. Mike worked his way up to managing the critical process of dry docking ships for repair. He loved his job and worked tirelessly to ensure that things ran smoothly. Mike was highly respected amongst his co-workers for his strong work ethic, skills and the high morale that he brought to the job each and every day.
Mike had an awesome childhood living out in the country. He loved to hang out with his brother and cousins and get into all kinds of mischief. He loved the outdoors, especially snow skiing, motorcycle riding, hunting and fishing. As he got older, he enjoyed watersports, playing adult-league softball and partaking in any activity that involved being with his many friends. Mike was an avid golfer and he loved to spend this time with his dad and his buddies. Coincidentally, he spent his last moments of life driving a perfect shot straight down the fairway. Mike was a loving and devoted father. He enjoyed time curled up on the couch watching movies with his girls and going for walks with them and their beloved dog, Zoey. He loved experiencing new things with his family, like ziplining and even trying new foods. Every chance he had to be with his girls made him the happiest.
Mike is survived by his longtime partner in life, Monica Valdez, his three daughters, Sophia and Paeyton Messmer and Anna Girvin of Hillsboro, his granddaughter Rylee Flatten, his mother Berniece "Bernie" Messmer of Cornelius, his father, David Messmer of Beaverton, his brother and sister-in-law, Kelly and Kory Messmer of Hillsboro, his niece, Lauren Messmer, and his nephews, Mitch and Drew Messmer.
