Paul McKernan

Forest Grove, Oregon

"How is it that I never saw your wings when you were here with me;
When you took your last breath and soared to heaven, I could hear and feel the flutter of your wings;
Your body no longer on earth, your spirit is here eternally and always in my heart;
I close my eyes and feel your wings surrounded me in my saddest and happiest moments, brushing against my face wiping away my tears I shed;
You earn those wings and you'll forever and always my eternal angel."

Paul John McKernan

June 16, 1959–December 6, 2025

Paul was born in Canada, on June 16, 1959 to Joan and Joseph McKernan. He had four brothers, Chris, Dan, Brian and Rob. While still young the family moved to San Jose, California, where Paul attended public schools. He went to David Caroline Intermediate School, then graduated from Oak Grove High School. While in high school Paul was on the wrestling team and the baseball team.

Paul’s first job after graduation was in Silicon Valley. Over time he returned to Canada and was the manager of a very successful Ukrainian restaurant. Paul would boast of the famous show-business people and other celebrities who were patrons of the restaurant.

Paul met the love of his life, Joan, in 2004. The first thing he said to her was, “I’m looking for a wife, not a friend”. His wonderful sense of humor, coupled with his unrelenting question to Joan: “can you be my wife?” Eventually won her over, and in time she said “yes”. They married in 2005. Over time, their pride and joy was born, Matt. Joan will tell you that in all of their years together (21), Paul and Joan never had an argument that last more than a day. After settling in Forest Grove, the family developed close friendships with the Ramento family, the Yagin family, the Pitterle family, and Glen and Anna and Jhoan and Todd. They enjoyed many get togethers, camping and vacation trips through the years.

Paul became friend and family with his long serving Hospice Team. Tom (his pastor), Toni (nurse case manager), Danielle (social worker) and Kami (home health aid, or “beautician “as the family called her). The team became like family through the long hospice journey. With Paul, and Joan, they would laugh, talk about a lot of things, keep secrets and more. Paul was always excited to know “who’s coming” and what will be the task for that day. The visits, at times, became a comedy conversation, which was in keeping with Paul’s robust sense of humor and positive outlook.

Paul will be remembered always as a very, very funny and smart man. Paul was rarely serious, even when he was in pain! Paul loved to travel and camping. He loved the ocean, the coast and walking around the local wetlands. Paul had enormous patience, was genuinely loving and devoted to Joan, Matt and all of his family

Paul is survived by Joan and Matt, and his previous partner and their children Kristi, Holden, Joseph and Kate and grandchildren Aberdeen and Marceline.
